Number of the day

Today is our 81st day in Year 2. So today you will need to use the number 81.

How many different ways can you make this number? Show this in a part – part – whole diagram Is it odd or even? How many hundreds/tens/ones? Can you work out double and half the number? If you can’t do it in your head straight away that’s ok, could you draw a picture e.g. tens and ones to help you work out the answer?

+1  +10   + 100

-1  - 10  - 100

Is it in the 2, 5 or 10 times table?

If 81 is a bit tricky then maybe use the number 8, 1 or 80 instead to start with. I have put a number of the day recording sheet in the files below in case you would like to use it.

Reading

Lexia

If you have completed a level recently, watch out in the post, there may be something on its way to you J

Read aloud to an adult. It would be great if you kept recording in your home school diary, I’ll be able to see all the books that you have read when we all get back to school.

Finish those stories today! Keep checking… have you go these things in your writing?

-Capital letters and full stops in the right places

-Good description using adjectives

- Conjunctions (e.g. and, but, because)

-Different sentences openers (e.g. the next morning, after a while, finally)

- Super spellings (especially check those year 1 and 2 words are spelt correctly – you can find a list in your diaries)

This morning during our zoom call I am going to give a bit more of an input into how to change your story map pictures into written sentences – please do join if you can.

Today’s job is to write the first part of your story.

Start off by writing the title of your story!

Then read the first sentence from your map out aloud a couple of times before you write it down. Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning of your sentence and a punctuation mark at the end.

Keep working through your story map in this way to make sure you don’t miss out any parts of the story.

Try to get up to the part where the boy found out that penguins came from the South Pole (although I know yours will be a different animal and maybe a different place too).

Keep checking your writing makes sense after every couple of sentences and that you have included good adjectives too – remember you can make changes to your writing as you read back through.

I’d love to see your story so far, please do send them to me to read!

Topic jobs today

Morning everyone,

The boats from yesterday were fab! If you still need to test yours out, I’m looking forward to finding out if they floated.

Class Zoom tomorrow at 11am- I can’t wait to see you all, I think we need a scavenger hunt and a little quiz J The link to the meeting will be here tomorrow morning.

I’m going to start today with Joe Wick’s workout and then have a little look over at Harold’s diary. It is Workout Wednesday today, so Joe’s workout has given us a good start! https://www.coramlifeeducation.org.uk/harolds-daily-diary

Harold said last week that he was finding it hard to be as active this lockdown, last time is was during the summer and the weather was much nicer to be out and about in for our daily exercise. I wonder what Harold is going to share with us today?

Here’s the link to Joe Wicks, live at 9am.

I have loved seeing and hearing about your story maps and how you have changed characters and places that they visit. It is the last day of story mapping to plan your new story today!

I wonder, will your story end in the same way as the original story or will something different happen.

Remember to retell your story using your story map. Don’t forget to write really good sentence starters onto your map too, for example, One day…. First… After that… Eventually…Finally…

These help to sequence your story when you write it properly, if you write them (and check the spelling of the words) onto your map now it will help you tomorrow.

19th January

Morning everyone,

How did you get on yesterday? There are some super photos of some work that I was sent yesterday on our gallery page. If you found your story map a bit tricky look at the wonderful examples that can been seen in the pictures to help you today.

This half term the value we are learning more about is Generosity. Do you know what this means? Mrs Beaver has recorded a collective worship for you to watch. You can find it on the ‘Class pages’ section of our website. (Click back to where our Year 2 green crayon is).

Remember our class zoom is on Thursday at 11am – write it in your diaries so you don’t forget J

Number of the day

Today is our 78th day in Year 2. So today you will need to use the number 78.

If 78 is a bit tricky then maybe use the number 7, 8 or 70 instead to start with. I have put a number of the day recording sheet in the files below in case you would like to use it.

Reading

Word search with your new spellings. Remember, if you're not sure what a word is or means, you need to find out.

Lexia

Read aloud to an adult. It would be great if you kept recording in your home school diary, I’ll be able to see all the books that you have read when we all get back to school.

English

Today we are going to focus on the next part of the story. If you have completed the whole original story map, today you need to make your changes to it. If you haven’t got a story map at all so far, today you need to create a story map for the next part of the story, making changes as you go.

This part of the story starts with ‘The next morning the boy found out that penguins come from the South Pole’. Remember you need to make sure your sentence makes sense so where does your new character come from? For example if you chose an elephant, you might discover that elephants come from Africa or a panda from China.

Stop when you get to the part of the story where the boy reaches the South Pole. ‘The boy was delighted by the penguin said nothing.’

Remember to retell this part of your new story to someone at home. Can you put together the beginning from yesterday and todays? You could even film yourself telling your story!

Today is the 5 times table. Have a go at counting in your 5’s to start with today. If you write these numbers down can you spot a pattern? Is the number 23 in the 5 times table? How do you know?

  • DT

Today I would like you to see if you can create a boat for the boy and penguin to travel to the South Pole in. What do you have at home that you could make it out of? What shape do you think it should be?

You might like to draw a design of your boat to start with. You could even make a penguin and boy to go into the boat too. The biggest challenge – will it float and how long for?

Adults I have attached a file which gives some instructions and suggestions of what could be used and how it could tested out – use this if it helps. The important thing is that the children make, test and modify their designs. Some will sink and that’s ok!

  • Picture news.

We have really enjoyed using this in class and now Mrs Beaver is sharing it every week. It is next to the collective worship link on the ‘Class pages’ section of the website. Have a read through the newspaper, either by yourself or with an adult. Then have a look at the file called ‘Picture news at home’. There is a picture to look at and some questions to talk about too.

18th January

Morning everyone,

How was your weekend? Mine seemed to go very quickly, I can’t believe it’s Monday again already! You’ll see some familiar things happening this week, for example, as it is Monday there will be a new spelling rule to learn and also a new artist of the week to listen to too.

Remember, you must try to complete the Maths, English and reading jobs every day this week. You should try to use Lexia and Numbots too and the topic jobs. Then there are always extras you could try, like the outdoor challenges and looking at Harold’s diary every day. Today is Mindful Monday.  https://www.coramlifeeducation.org.uk/harolds-daily-diary

Our class Zoom will be on Thursday this week at 11am. I will put the link to it on here by Wednesday. If you didn’t make it last week it would be lovely to see you this week!

Let’s start the day with Joe Wicks, live at 9am. I hope his leg is ok after Friday!

18.1.21

Number of the day

Today is our 77th day in Year 2. So today you will need to use the number 77.

If 77 is a bit tricky then maybe use the number 7, or 70 instead to start with. I have put a number of the day recording sheet in the files below in case you would like to use it.

Spellings

Ask an adult to test your spellings from last week. Then have a look at this week’s spelling rule. It is explained in the power point and your new list to learn is also in the files.

Handwriting

You could print the sheet or just use it to check the size and joins of the letters in the words.

Reading

Lexia

Read aloud to an adult. It would be great if you kept recording in your home school diary, I’ll be able to see all the books that you have read when we all get back to school.

So, last week we listened to this story and by the end of the week, you should have made a story map of the story. I know some of you may have got this finished and some of you may have only just started it.

Today you will need the first part of your story map – up until “The boy wanted to help the penguin but he didn’t know how. So if you haven’t managed to map it, that’s your first job this morning.

Then I would like you to have a look at your story map and make some changes.

(Adults this is the first step in making the story their own. A great simple change would be to change the penguin to another animal, e.g. the boy found a panda at this doorstep. Adding more detail is another possible, more challenging change e.g. Once there was a boy, who wore a bright red stripy top, and one day he found a very tired and worried looking penguin at his doorstep.)

The changes are up to you, the important thing is that the structure of the story is still there. I have added a photo of how I have made changes to my map by putting a new picture on top of the old one.

Retell your story verbally to someone at home, making sure you have included the changes you have made. Remember the more you tell your story the more you remember and the easier it will be to write.

Maths

Watch and do the activities in this video. https://vimeo.com/490420447

I don’t know about you but I think the more you give it a go during the ‘Lets learn’ section of the video the easier the questions then are. Today is about the 2 times table. You should be able to count up in your 2’s to at least 20 and then our aim is to know our times table facts. Have you still got the little cards we made in school in your book bag? If you have lost them maybe you could make some more today. Put the question on the front and the answer on the back.

We are going to learn all about food chains today.

  • Watch this video, it explains what a food chain is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L2MZdOIZrs

  • There are lots of tricky new science words in this video. Can you write a list of them and what they mean e.g. Herbivore –only eats plants
  • Making food chains. There are a couple of files which have a blank food chain template and also some pictures of a range of creatures. How many food chains can you make? (Adults the answers are on the last sheet!)

Remember, these are just some ideas. There is no need to print these, you could draw your own pictures and could easily just draw an arrow between the pictures to show the ‘is eaten by’. Maybe you could be even more creative in how to show the food chains. I have added some photos for inspiration – it’s up to you, the important thing is trying to use the new vocabulary in explaining the food chain and using our knowledge of habitats to help us too e.g. hopefully I won’t see a food chain where a penguin eats a cat!
