5th February

Morning,

So lovely to see such smiley faces yesterday on our zoom yesterday and great to see more of you join us too.

I’m going to end this week by saying a very big THANK YOU! It’s not much fun being a teacher at the moment when you don’t have all the children in your class actually in your classroom. (Year 2, you know I don’t like going to boring meetings and at the moment it is like one loooooonnnnnggggggg boring meeting, you children are much more fun to work with than most adults, but shhhh, don’t tell anyone I said that!) However, every day, you continue to amaze me with the fabulous work you send in and the emails you send telling me what you are getting up to. You are making me a very happy Miss Walton and I know your adults at home are very proud of you too, because they’ve told me!

Have a great weekend when it arrives. I’m looking forward to seeing what next week brings. Don’t forget to read the newsletter to find out what is happening next Friday!

Let’s get going this morning with Joe at 9am. Will his costume beat last weeks?!

Number of the day

Today is our 91st day in Year 2. So today you will need to use the number 91.

How many different ways can you make this number? Show this in a part – part – whole diagram Is it odd or even? How many hundreds/tens/ones? Can you work out double and half the number? If you can’t do it in your head straight away that’s ok, could you draw a picture e.g. tens and ones to help you work out the answer?

+1  +10   + 100

-1  - 10  - 100

Is it in the 2, 5 or 10 times table?

If 91 is a bit tricky then maybe use the number 9 or 90 instead to start with. I have put a number of the day recording sheet in the files below in case you would like to use it.

English

Today is all about a type of word. They are called compound words. Have a look at this video and then have a go at the activity in the files. Can you think of any other examples?

There are questions to think about today about our story. The first ones are questions to talk about with someone, the next set are ones to think about yourself and you could write down the answers, the last set of questions are for you to try and answer yourself. May be you could write down your answer and then discuss it with an adult at home.

3rd February

Morning,

Yesterday afternoon was a success in my house – my cakes turned out looking like cakes not pancakes! Reuben helped drip the chocolate on but I think he may have eaten more than what went on the cakes J

It has been lovely to hear you take the time to express yourself in different ways - singing, going for walks, jumping in puddles, watching the birds and snuggling up to read. All this and doing fabulous school jobs too! Keep going Year 2!

Are you going to join Joe Wicks this morning? I think I better after eating those cakes!

Art

How lovely are these animal pictures! They were made by tearing and cutting paper and sticking it down on a background. I love them because they are all so different. May be you could create your very own animal in the same sort of way. It doesn’t have to be a polar bear or penguin. I think I might try out a giraffe! I would love to see yours.

2nd February

Morning,

Firstly, I am hoping that everyone received the emailed letter from Mrs Beaver yesterday. I am going to pop a zoom link on here for today, if the children have any questions, drop in, say hi and we can have a chat or if you would rather, send me an email, I can get back to you personally.

I really enjoyed reading your predictions about our new story yesterday. I have popped up the first few pages for you to listen to (or turn the sound off and read it yourself!) today, it is right at the bottom of the list of files. I’ll add some more tomorrow and then will read the whole story at our class zoom on Thursday.

I'm going to attempt to bake some cakes this afternoon with my little boy, it didn't go well last time, he just tried to eat the flour and my dog kept barking at the sound of the mixer! I'll let you know how I get on. Try and take some time today to do something that you really enjoy. I'd love to hear what you get up to.

English

Read the first few pages of our story. Then have a go at the setting description. All the instructions on what to do are in the files.

Reading

Rapid retrieval questions. Rapid means quick. Retrieval means getting something back. So today, you have to find the answers quickly. This means thinking carefully about what you have read and remembering or finding the part of the story that the question is talking about quickly, not re reading the whole thing from the beginning. There is a link to the story being read by the actual author too if you can’t wait to hear the rest of it.

-Lexia

Maths

Today start by having a little look at the ‘1st maths job’ file. This is a recap of the learning you would have done in Year 1 about money. See if you can remember what all the coins are called. If you have some at home, you could use real coins too.

If you are feeling confident and you can name the coins then you are ready for today’s video.

1st February

Morning,

Have a look at the date today, I can’t believe its February already. Maybe today have a practise at spelling ‘February’, can you remember why it must have a capital letter F to start? Also, have a look at the short number date – explain to an adult what each number means in it. How is it different to yesterday’s date?

This week is a special week across the country, it is Children’s mental health week. We all know it is really important to look after our bodies by eating healthily and exercising, but did you know that it is just as important to look after our minds too? Looking after our minds is called our mental health and it is always important to do this, but is more important than ever at the moment while our lives are pretty different to usual.  The theme for this year is ‘Express yourself’.  It is about finding ways to share feelings, thoughts, or ideas, in a creative way. This could be through art, music, writing and poetry, dance and drama, photography and film, and doing activities that make you feel good. Every day this week, I’ll pop up some ideas for you to try out at home.

Joe Wicks, live at 9am this morning https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ

Keep working hard like usual Year 2. Have a lovely day.

This week’s new spelling rule and list is in the files below.

Our new spellings are written in our beautiful cursive handwriting for you to give a go. Remember to make sure those letters are sitting on the line and the tall long ladder letters are nice and tall. Try to do at least 3 of every word.

If anyone is having trouble with remembering log in details or you haven’t managed to log in at all so far, please do let me know. I can try and help over the phone or have a quick zoom to show you. There does seem to be some days where the site is a little temperamental and wants the children to repeat levels or seems to get stuck and doesn’t let them past an answer – when it does this, the only thing I can suggest is the classic ‘turn it off and back on again’ method! If it does constantly do this, again, please let me know.

English

There is a lovely new story this week as lots of you on our class zoom said you enjoyed Lost and Found so much.

Today, I am only going to show you the front cover! You are going to make some predictions about the book and the story. Write in clear sentences, with a capital letter and full stop. Remember, if the question has a ‘why’ in it then I am looking for a ‘because’ in your answer.

If you haven’t ever read this book – please don’t until you have done these questions! If you have read the book before, try and pretend that you haven’t and only use the clues from the picture.

Maths

Odd and even today!

We have spent the last couple of weeks using multiplication and division however I have heard that lots of us are still finding recognising odd and even numbers a bit tricky sometimes. Today’s learning is about being able to spot whether a number is odd or even but also being able to ‘reason’ – to explain clearly how you know as well.

Collective worship

Mrs Beaver has recorded a Collective worship for you to watch today. If you have a brother or sister in school then this will be something that they will be watching today too so try and watch it together and then you can talk to each other about it.

Mental health week

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fZjMYdQjGM

Watch this video – it is a story called ‘Beautiful oops’.  It is about turning little mistakes into something new by thinking of it not as a mistake but a chance to turn it into something different. This can be tricky sometimes when you have a clear idea or plan of what you want something to look like in the end and then that plan has to change. You might get a bit upset, angry or frustrated. Try to remember that even though it may not have gone exactly to plan and it may have turned out differently it can still be beautiful, wonderful, fun and exciting.

See if you can try out some of these idea in the file below. All of them start with something looking very similar, you need to express yourself and use your imagination to turn them into different things.

Adults this is a lovely activity which the children could do regularly to help them express how they are feeling.
