22nd-26th February

Morning,

It was so great to see lots of you yesterday at our class zoom.

I mentioned yesterday when we were talking about World book day next week. One of the challenges that we have been set will need a cardboard box of some sort, so if you have any, keep hold of them for next week! More information about this will be given soon.

Let’s see what fancy dress Joe has this morning!

Number of the day

Today is our 101st day in Year 2. So today you will need to use the number 101.

How many different ways can you make this number? Show this in a part – part – whole diagram Is it odd or even? How many hundreds/tens/ones? Can you work out double and half the number? If you can’t do it in your head straight away that’s ok, could you draw a picture e.g. hundreds, tens and ones to help you work out the answer?

+1  +10   + 100

-1  - 10  - 100

Is it in the 2, 5 or 10 times table?

If 101 is a bit tricky then maybe jump back to the number 10 or 11.

English

Today I would like you to start by looking back at your plan from yesterday. Today you need to retell your new story, however, how you do it is up to you.

You might:

-Write your story

-Draw a story board and add 1 or 2 sentences

- Act out your story. You could film yourself or make puppets to do the talking

-Make puppets and take photos, add captions in something like imovie/powerpoint

-Stop animation (if you have the time and technical knowhow already!)

Reading

Have a listen to another story in the Lighthouse keeper series today!

There are others in the series too if you have enjoyed these stories.

Number of the day

Today is our 100th day in Year 2. So today you will need to use the number 100. Oohh what has happened to the number of digits now? Are there just tens and ones in the number now?

How many different ways can you make this number? Show this in a part – part – whole diagram Is it odd or even? How many hundreds/tens/ones? Can you work out double and half the number? If you can’t do it in your head straight away that’s ok, could you draw a picture e.g. tens and ones to help you work out the answer?

+1  +10   + 100

-1  - 10  - 100

Is it in the 2, 5 or 10 times table?

If 100 is a bit tricky then maybe jump back and have another go at the number 10 or 20. Adults it is really important that the children know their bonds to 10 and 20 e.g. 9+1 and 19+1.

English

Today I would like you to think back to the story of the Lighthouse keeper’s lunch. You are going to use the structure of this story to plan your own today. In the files is a planning sheet. I wonder what you will change the characters to? Think carefully about your story today – you might even like to make a storyboard of your own story or draw out a story map to help you plan it.

Tomorrow you will have a choice on how you tell your new story (so no moaning and groaning about writing today please! Also remember if we find something tricky the best way to make it easier is to practise, practise, practise!)

Reading

Read the short set of instructions and then answer the questions afterwards. Can you think why I have chosen this piece of writing today?

Design

Think about your favourite foods and meals. You could...

-Design a 3 course dinner.

-Plan your perfect day of meals.

-Draw, label, create a menu.

You might need time this afternoon to finish off (or start) the wonderful window pictures from yesterday too.

There are also some 100 days at school challenges in the files too.

24th February

Morning,

What a beautiful day it was yesterday. I went for a little walk and spotted signs of spring. I saw these lovely purple flowers, do you know what they are called? It was amazing to see and hear so many birds tweeting away in the sunshine too. Have you spotted any signs of spring yet?

Tomorrow is Thursday and so it will be our class zoom at 11am. I'll put the link on here tomorrow morning. Keep sending in that wonderful work!

Joe Wicks at 9am this morning. Wonder what his quiz will be about this morning. Lets go!

Number of the day

Today is our 99th day in Year 2. So today you will need to use the number 99.

If 99 is a bit tricky then maybe use the number 9 or 90 instead to start with. I have put a number of the day recording sheet in the files below in case you would like to use it.

English

Following on from yesterday – today’s challenge is character descriptions. You could choose 1 or 2 of the characters from the story. Think carefully about not just what they look like but how they act too.

There is a second English challenge today called Word detectives. In the lighthouse keeper’s lunch story there are some fabulous words used like ‘brazen’ and ‘industrious’. We have spoken a lot in Year 2 about it being important to know the meaning of new words we read so we understand what the text is about – there is no point being able to read the word if you don’t know what it means and can then borrow it for your own writing too!

Reading

All about Iguanas today! Follow the link and then answer the questions. Remember to listen really carefully to the words that are being spoken to see if you can hear the answers.

Maths

Today we are going to start a new area of learning in Maths. It is all about 2D shapes.

What could you make a lighthouse from?! Have a look in the files for a template and some pictures of what you could create. I'm sure you've got some recycling bits and bobs like cereal boxes, plastic bottles or kitchen roll tubes you could turn into something new. See how creative you can be.

Art

Imagine you live in Mr and Mrs Grinling’s cottage at the top of the hill. Have a look back at the pictures from the story to help you. What would you see if you looked out of the window? Imagine your piece of paper is the window and draw what you think you would see In the picture below they've even added curtains! I think these are lovely but it's a little bit of a shame that they all look so much alike. I'm sure yours will be more unique.

Picture news

This week’s news has the question ‘Do walls divide us or protect us’.

22nd February

Morning Year 2!

Welcome back, I hope you all had a lovely half term. It was a bit wet and windy wasn’t it! I’d love to hear about what you got up to.

So we know that the people in Government who make the rules have said that most of us need to carry on our learning from home for a little while longer. I know there has been lots on the news in the last week talking about different date and that Boris Johnson will be on the TV later to talk about it more. I said before half term that at school, we can’t wait to fling open our doors and have you all back as soon as we are allowed to.

Until then, we are all going to carry on doing the same amazing job that we were doing before half term. Get back in the swing of things today by starting with Joe Wicks at 9am this morning https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ  (even if you join in your PJs!)

Mrs Beaver will lead a live Collective worship today at 2.30pm. It would be wonderful to see lots of you join us.

Spellings

Spelling test first this morning. Have a quick peek at the spelling rule from last week to help you before you start. Let me know how you get on.

This week’s new spelling rule and list is in the files below.

Handwriting

Our new spellings are written in our beautiful cursive handwriting for you to give a go. Remember to make sure those letters are sitting on the line and the tall long ladder letters are nice and tall. Try to do at least 3 of every word. You could put the words into a sentence too.

Reading

Read the story called ‘The lighthouse keeper’s lunch’ There is the story in the files below. You might like to listen to the story afterwards too. https://youtu.be/46wCRq50Wwg

You’ll need to have read this story to do your English job for today.

English

After reading the story, see if you can use the storyboard template to retell the story using words and pictures.

Maths

We ended last half term by learning more about money. The next couple of days are some problem solving. Today is about finding change.

Artist of the week

Head over to the Artist of the week star on our blog to see who it is this week.

Information about lighthouses

In the story you read today is an important type of building. Have a read of the information about lighthouses in the files. You might like to research to find out more about where lighthouses are in England or even across the UK, or even the world.  I wonder if you can zoom in on google maps or google earth. I think they are really interesting, beautiful buildings. Find out more and decide what you think of them.
