'Knowing we are loved, we learn and grow to be the best that we can be.'

Reception

In Reception, children begin a systematic programme of phonics learning, which will eventually lead to them reading, and then writing.  The emphasis is always on talking and sounding out letters and then words.

Phonics knowledge is built up through songs, rhymes, stories and games.  Letters are made out of sand, bricks, playdough and paint!    The topic of how to learn phonics is too huge to explain here, but briefly children learn to recognise, say and write letters and sounds.  This process continues throughout their primary career.  Once they know letters and the corresponding sound, they can start to read words by blending the sounds from the letters that they recognise.

During Reception the children learn stories as part of our Talk for Writing English programme, and during the year, your children will learn such stories as, Goldilocks and the 3 bears,  Going on a bear hunt, Take a walk Little Bear, Bog Baby, Owl babies, Gingerbread Man, Dear Zoo, Where's Spot, Hairy McClary stories, Nativity story, Whatever Next, 3 Billy Goats Gruff, Good Night Owl, Aliens love underpants, The Enormous Turnip, Super tato, Octopus' Garden and Lighthouse Keeper stories.

As you can see it is a rich diet of stories to fire up their imagination and learn words from!
