'Knowing we are loved, we learn and grow to be the best that we can be.'

Week beginning 18.01.2020

Friday 22nd January

Good morning everyone!

How are you all today? We have reached the end of our third week of home schooling together. Well done for all the fantastic work I am being sent on Tapestry, it really does show how hard you are all working at home. It is the last day of the school week today can you remember what that is? Have a look outside and decide what weather you will put on your calendar today.  I wonder if you have seen the pictures of the floods near Manchester. If you have been out for a walk to do your daily exercise then you might have seen how flooded our river in Blandford  is. Do you know what today’s number is? I wonder if you know or can find out the number which is one more than today’s number.

I have also been reminded by one of our lovely parents about the live webcams on Winterwatch. I have added the link for you all. They start at 10 am. Last night when I had a look I could see starlings roosting for the night. I am sure many of you have enjoyed Winterwatch and I am sure there are parts of it that the children would be interested in too.

I also know that Jo Wicks will be starting the day with one of his workouts if you want to try that out  and I know he likes to dress up on Friday too!!

I loved the Awongalema trees you drew yesterday well done. Today I want you to listen to the story again and afterwards see if you can draw the journey the animals made from the tree to the wise mountain. You can label the different places like the red rock and the grass lands. You could add in your favourite animal from the story on its journey too.

Do you remember the new sounds Fig and Dom have taught us this week? They have been very impressed with how hard you’ve worked this week. Watch the video for some work to help us remember the sounds and a short activity too. You will need to pause the video today to play the I –spy game otherwise the answers will be revealed too soon!! Adults if you want to watch it first so have an idea of what to look for that might be helpful.

MATHEMATICS

Today we will be using  the video below we are on Alive in 5! week 3 session 3. I am so impessed with how many of you have used Numbots, if you haven’t had a go yet then try it today.

READING

Keep up with your reading and if you haven’t tried out Teach your Monster to Read  then have a go today.

I have also found the link below which will allow you to join free for the next 30 days and has some great games for practising blending in particular. They need the child to read real words and made up words and the focus is on blending for reading. Why not try one out for a different reading activity. We are working in Phase 2 and at the beginning of Phase 3 so you will need to select words with the sounds in that we have learnt so far.

There is no obligation to continue with it after the 30 days

We have the opportunity to access the music programme we use in school.

You will need to enter a password and username.

The username is Elmer followed by your child's initials ( in capital letters) e.g. ElmerSF

the password  is YearR.

The link below will take you to the log in page which will look like this our package is Everyone. If you click on this it will take you to the lessons to work through. The children are familiar with this and I hope will enjoy being able to access this from home.Start on session 1.

Here is a funny story for you to enjoy. I love how mixed up the chameleon gets. I wonder if you could draw or paint or make a mixed up creature? What head would you use? What about the legs and body, would it have a tail or wings or both like the chameleon?

Thursday 21st January

Good morning everyone!  We loved seeing you on our zoom call yesterday. I am so sorry about the sound issues – we have now resolved those so hopefully next week will run smoothly for us. We loved seeing all your pets. We could not believe how good the guinea pigs were and we saw your lovely cats and dogs too. We also saw a gorgeous baby brother and an amazing big sister holding him very carefully and confidently. Thank you parents for enabling your children to join in with us, especially those of you that are also juggling home working.

How did you get on with Jo Wicks yesterday? We managed to complete the whole workout although Mrs Peters and I were quite tired afterwards!! It was so rainy yesterday, did you go outside at all? It was the perfect day for splashing in puddles wasn’t it.

Do you know what day of the week it is today? Have a look outside and decide what weather you will put on your calendar today. Do you know what today’s number is?  It is 1 more than 20.

How did you get on with your vet and  pet shops yesterday? We have set up a vets in school too.

We have talked about pet animals and we saw some wild animals in the Dear Zoo book.

Here is a story today about some animals from a country called Zambia which is in Africa. It is a very hot and dry place.

Awongalema tree

The awongalema tree is truly magical isn’t it. The tortoise was so polite and calm and he remembered the magical name, why didn’t the other animals remember it? They all said they would didn’t they but then they got distracted. Which animal was your favourite in the story? I think mine is the tortoise.Today I want you to think about the awongalema tree and all the animals in the story. I would like you draw your favourite part of the story. You might even draw all of the animals. Can you write a sentence to go with your picture today?

PHONICS

Do you remember the new sound Fig and Dom have taught us yesterday? Well today we will be practising that sound and writing our sentence.

You might like to have a quick look at Harold's diary if you didn't do it yesterday. Today is thinking of others Thursday. I wonder who Harld will be thinking about today.

Why not try making some masks for the animals in the story we heard today then you can act it out.

I know these are not the animals form the story but you can see how easily they have been made just add holes for eyes and then the animals ears and other features. If it is the lion you could even make the mane!!

Wednesday 20th January

Over on Harold’s diary it is workout Wednesday  so I wonder what he will be up to today? I also know that Jo Wicks will be starting the day with one of his workouts if you want to try that out and it is also our PE day. So a day to be really active, you can try another one of the activities from Get Set 4 PE and you can also try some yoga when you watch the video below.

Remember you don’t have to do it all now you could do some this morning and some later today.

Are you ready to learn some yoga with your favorite Nick Jr. friends? Learn the 'Tree Pose' with Kung Fu Marshall, The Guppy Pose with Molly (Bubble Guppies)...

Do you know what day of the week it is today? Have a look outside and decide what weather you will put on your calendar today. Do you know what today’s number is?  It is 20.I wonder if you know what the 2 represents in this number, how about the 0. Does anyone know the number you have to double to make 20?

Yesterday in school we were talking about who looks after animals if they are poorly  - do you know? Here is a story about one of our favourite story characters that has been made into a film for you to watch.

Hairy Maclary - Hairy Maclary's Rumpus at the Vet's (1996)

Hairy Maclary is sitting quietly at the vet's.That is until Cassie the Cockatoo decides to liven things up a bit!

There certainly was trouble at the vets wasn’t there. I wonder if you have ever taken a pet to the vets? I know lots of you have toy animals at home so why not set up a little vet area  or maybe a pet shop.

Parents: role play is an important part of learning in Reception and we often change the role play area in our classroom to fit in with the theme of our learning. Role play allows children the opportunity to explore real life experiences in their own way it also provides ways to use their reading, writing and mathematical skills. This can be set up very easily with just soft toys or plastic ones and some home made signs. Your child will be able to write some of these labels themselves and in school this is what they would be doing. Allow them the opportunity to create animal cages or crates to carry the pets. If you have it add a play phone or old mobile phone and leave out paper or a small note book for writing down the pet names and what is wrong with them.Another role play to set up might be a simple pet shop, again use toy animals and give them price tags and labels. If you have any empty animal food boxes these could also be for sale.I have added some photos to help you but let your children guide this. They usually love setting up shops and role play areas. Older siblings or willing parents may have to be customers or pet owners!!

Do you remember the new sound Fig and Dom have taught us on Monday? We have another new one to learn today so get ready.

MATHEMATICS

I am very impressed with how well you are using Numbots – do you like it? I would like you to keep going with your number posters and  today  I would like you to play a game. Do you remember the game you played last week where things were in a hoop or out of the hoop?

Today we will be playing it again but this time I want you to find a way to show me and your grown ups what you have scored each time.

So you could play this with balls, soft toys, or scrunched up paper works well too. Start with 5 objects to throw, decide what you will throw them into and then take your turn. How many went in?

Write down your score, so if  2 go in then your score is 2. If you are playing with someone else take turns and if you are playing on your own then have another go.  How many did you get in altogether, how will you show this?

I have put a short film on Tapestry for this , I am afraid Pippa got involved in the game too!!

Tuesday 19th January

Good morning everyone!

So let’s start with today’s learning…

Do you know what day it is today? Have a look outside and decide what weather you will put on your calendar today I think I can guess!!  I also saw on one of our friends’ calendars that they had a space to talk about how they were feeling that day. You could try that today too. Can you remember our beautiful heart book at school which reminded us about our feelings? How does your heart feel today? Happy, sad, scared, brave, calm, shy, silly? Why not add a picture to your calendar to show how you feel today.

We are going to start this morning by watching and listening to this week’s worship with Mrs Beaver. Remember how we sit and listen quietly and respectfully in school, make sure you do the same at home. If you have older brothers and sisters in school then they can watch this with you.

Generosity Worship 18th January

Please feel free to stop the worship and discuss as a family.

In this worship Mrs Beaver told us that this term we are going to be thinking about the value of generosity. What did you hear about in worship today? Can you think of someone you know who is generous? Have a chat with each other about this.

Did you enjoy the story yesterday? Would you like any of those animals for your pet? I have seen some super pet drawings as well as photos of your pets. Today I would like you to think about all the things you need to do to look after your pet or a  pet you have chosen. Think about what they need to be happy and healthy. Here is what I thought of for Pippa. I have given you some pictures to help you out too but you are all such good pet owners that I am sure you will know exactly what your pets need!!

Parents: I am not expecting the children to write what I have written, I would like them to draw their pet and be able to tell you what they have drawn and why the pet needs it then you can add their comments to the picture.

Here is a story for you - Pippa joined in again!!

PHONICS

Do you remember the new sound we learnt yesterday?  Today we are going to practise using it again. Parents, I hope the video was helpful do stop and start it as you need to. I must also apologise for the whirring in the background it is my laptop which is struggling a bit now I think so I am sorry if the sound was difficult for you. Do stop and start the video as you need to.

MATHEMATICS

Well done for all the super maths posters I saw yesterday, don’t worry if you haven’t finished all of them you can keep adding to these this week. Today we are going to make up some maths stories using what we have learnt about 5 and the parts we can use to make the whole number 5. This does not mean you have to write a story , don’t worry. I would like you to watch the video to see what you need to do. But first some   pet subitising for you.

I found these really colourful cats and wondered if you might like to try and make one of them. I love the patterns on them. You could paint them, draw them or even collage them. They are by an artist called Laurel Burch.

Monday 18th January

Good morning everyone!  I hope you all enjoyed the weekend. I decided to do some jobs in my garden which meant I had to  do lots of cutting things down and digging things up!! I was very happy to find these flowers  hiding under another big plant which I have cut down. I wonder if you know what these are called.

So let’s start with today’s learning…

It is the first day of the school week today can you remember what that is? Have a look outside and decide what weather you will put on your calendar today. Do you know what today’s number is? I wonder if you know or can find out the number which is one more than today’s number.

Let’s get moving for the start of the day. I know that you can go to Jo Wicks youtube for his PE lesson or you might like to join in with this song to help you wake up and get started to day!!

Wake Up! School Assembly Song and Dance from Songs For EVERY Assembly by Out of the Ark Music

This week  we are going to spend some time thinking about our pets and other animals. We are going to start this off with a great story which you might already know!!

Dear Zoo

I wonder if you would like any of those animals for a pet? A zoo is like an animal park  a place that people can visit to see all sorts of different creatures. I wonder if any of you have ever been to an animal park or zoo. What did you see there? If you haven’t been then perhaps you can think about what animals you would like to see.

I know lots of you have got pets and you have seen my dog Pippa. Today I would like you to draw your pet and if you don’t have a pet at home then perhaps draw a pet that someone else in your family has  or the pet you would like!

I had a   go at drawing and writing about Pippa ,I don't think she thought much of my drawing do you!

I would also like you to  think about what animals you have seen or would like to see at a zoo.  It is actually possible to watch some animals at zoos even though we are in lockdown!!

Click on the links below and see what you can watch.

Do you remember the new sounds Fig and Dom have taught us last week?  We have another new sound for today and all our tricky words are on the video too. You will also need paper and something to write with today.

Phonics lesson for 18.01.2021

MATHEMATICS

Today I would like you to make sure you have a play on Numbots I know lots of you logged in last week and I know you are really enjoying this. Then we are going to start a maths job whch will take longer than today so you can work on this for as long as it takes you. I would like you to make some maths posters for your home ( they only need to be the size of a normal sheet of paper  and we are going to make these for numbers 1- 5. I want the posters to show lots of different representations of each number so for example they might draw the numberblock, the numicon, a hand showing the correct number of fingers, a dice showing spots, they could stick on a playing card, draw a domino or draw other groups of objects that represent that number. I have one here as an example for you and I have also added a picture of the nuicon to remind what they all look like and the numberblocks too.

HANDWRITING

I have been very impressed with the children’s writing but I have  noticed that there is some letter formation that needs practise. This is  something that  we would have been doing daily alongside name writing practise for those that still need it and activities which we call finger fun. I have added some videos today to show you the correct letter formation. Letter formation practise is fairly easy for you to do at home. I use  plain paper and rule lines on it then using a light coloured felt tip pen I write out the child’s name if that is what is required and then the letter for practise followed by a line for them to try themselves. Another way to do is to choose a letter from their writing that you can see needs practise and to focus on that. The letters that children find the most tricky are the curly caterpillar letters. I am not trying to add to your burden of home learning but it  would be really helpful if you could support your child with this. It only needs to a very short session  and not necessarily every day. Please see the photos below to give an example of what I mean.

I have  added a few suggestions for finger fun to start you off.

Scrunch up pieces of newspaper as small and tight as you can with only one hand  and throw them into the bin.

Find some clothes pegs and peg them onto  a piece of cardboard or a paper plate if you have one.

If you have a small empty drinks bottle then posting small buttons or pennies into it.

Last Monday we looked at out PSHE work and I would like you to return to that and have a go at the second activity.

it is also Mindful Monday for Harold so have a look and see what he is up to today. The link is under the giraffe on our class page.
