French
French at Blandford St Mary CE Primary School
Curriculum Intent Statement
Our intent at Blandford St Mary is to instil a love of language and sound, to make French understandable and entertaining to speak. Children should have a sense of achievement, of having stepped outside their normal communication patterns into something new. As their learning progresses, they will make connections between phonics in English and spelling patterns in French. They will decompose, segment and blend sounds in French, based on graphemes and phonemes just as in learning English
Curriculum Implementation Statement
French is taught from Years 3-6 by the class teacher, using the online resource, Lightbulblanguages. The main activities are aimed at a 30 min lesson with follow-on activities to be included throughout the week. These follow-on activities can be low-stakes quizzes, taking the register in French, playing bingo, singing French songs, and giving instructions in French. Within each term, there is a phonics/grammar focus which builds in the same way that learning in English grammar builds year on year and feeds into accurate writing and speaking.
Curriculum Impact Statement
We use a variety of strategies to evaluate the knowledge, understanding and skills that our children have gained in each unit of French:
• CPD to ensure that teacher pedagogy is secure.
• regular verbal feedback and pupil voice feedback.
• subject monitoring from the subject leader
• Use of our extensive tailored knowledge organisers.
• regular low stakes knowledge assessments, using a range of creative approaches
